Early history
about the quarry is unsure but it is believed that quarrying
at Ty Mawr started around the 1800s to supply local demands.
Commercial quarrying started later, after numerous trials
had been carried out by local partnerships. By the 1840's
several had tried and failed to make a success of the quarry.
Ty Mawr was then leased out in two separate quarrying setts,
Ty Mawr East and West.
Towards the end of the 19th century ownership of Ty Mawr
West had passed through several hands until 1908, when 'Welsh
Green Slate Ltd' took over.
The quarry seemed to be running smoothly, with demands for
green slate increasing after the First World War. The depression
of the 1920's took its toll.
In 1932 the quarry was purchased by Dorotrhea Quarry. No
commercial quarrying has been carried out at Ty Mawr West
since, until now. |
